This week is Week of Work in South Dakota
Jarod Larson
The week of April 19th marks the Week of Work in South Dakota. The initiative is intended to introduce students to career opportunities within our communities. The project’s focus is on career exploration, with an emphasis on connecting businesses and employers to future employees. Prior to Covid-19, the Brandon Valley School District was deeply invested into the planning for a substantial paid apprenticeship and internship program in collaboration with the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce for students at BVHS.
In addition to the Week of Work, we view paid internships as a valuable work-based learning experience for some students and look forward to revitalizing the planning and implementation of paid internships when the circumstances allow. Career exploration and work-based learning experiences are valuable long-term investments for students and South Dakota.

Based on the number of buildings recently affected, the number of students and staff who now need to quarantine and the time required for contact tracing, New London Public Schools will need to close all schools to in-person instruction through Jan. 29.
The Central Office building is also affected and will transfer to working remotely as well, the superintendent said.
All staff and students will have distance learning until Feb. 1, when the district plans to resume its hybrid model.
All students will receive live teaching throughout the day, including Wednesdays.
The number of distance learners at Staples has tripled since the start of the school year with 363 students, roughly 20% of the population, fully remote as of Dec. 7. 125 students were distance learners on the first day of school.
The number of students deciding to go fully remote is only expected to increase as winter break nears, according to Assistant Principal Patrick Micinilio
“The number of distance earners has been increasing daily as we get closer to the winter break,” Micinilio said. “Grade-level Assistant Principals and/or counselors have been getting emails from parents on a daily basis requesting that their children get switched to Distance Learners until the holiday break or for the rest of the semester (or beyond).”
