KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 Malaysia fully supports the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries’ (CPOPC) move to submit an objection to Belgium which is planning to ban the use of palm oil as biofuel next year. CPOPC had made its objection through a letter dated May 24 to Belgian Prime Minister.

Up until now, much of the lobbying over EU-Malaysia trade has revolved around the controversial issue of palm oil. In early 2019, the EU adopted the Delegated Regulation for its second Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), which will phase out the use of palm oil as biofuel in Europe by 2030 because of environmental reasons.
Malaysia, the world s second-largest palm oil producer, opened a case against the EU using the World Trade Organization s Dispute Settlement Mechanism in January. So, too, has Indonesia, the world s largest palm oil producer.
Both Southeast Asian states, which have vowed to work together to oppose the EU s decision, claim Brussels is merely engaged in discriminatory and protectionist trade practices.

Badal urges Union Finance Minister to convene meeting as critical issues hang fire
Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal has asked Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to convene a meeting of the GST Council to discuss key issues including essential medicines and equipment for Covid-19 treatment being stuck in ports and airports.
Talking to the reporters, he said the Governments have to more nimble. “Aid is needed and it is urgent,” he said.
Badal said in a letter to the Finance Minister that the GST Council had not met in the last six months even though Council’s own rules provide for holding at least one meeting every quarter. “However, failure to hold any constructive consultation with States for so long in such critical times makes me wonder whether Centre has usurped all the power of States putting the spirit of cooperative federalism- that formed the very foundation of achieving consensus on
