individuals and actual voters saying if he thinks that about john mccain, what does he think about me and my husband and what does he think about my father? the numbers will not work for him. the question i have about that though is those same grassroots republicans you re describing, what they already think of john mccain. so many of them as a politician those are a lot of same people that got john mccain the nomination. there are a lot of grumpy old men out there who many of them have military records and did service and they were drawn to john mccain. they also liked in some cases people like ron paul. they like the grumpy old man. those people are not one of the themes of politics for the last decade or so, republican politics for last 15 years when john mccain ran against george w. bush and was blasted as relying on democratic voters to beat him when he did immigration reform with ted kennedy in 2006 and 2007 there s been a strain of conservative disgruntlement with john
of institute of study of war. good to have you here. good morning. martha: you think this is fairly safe choice but a fairly good one, correct. absolutely. it s a safe, non-controversial pick. he has years of experience with the pentagon in two administrations. i know him on a personal level. he is very thoughtful and approachable. the generals know him. some the new ones in key positions will get to know him pretty quickly because he is that approachable but the fact of the matter is he has got huge challenges in front of him. as eric mentioned this is the fourth secretary of defense in six years. the fact of the matter is a lot of military strategy, not policy, but strategy and how we do things is driven from the white house and that is quite unprecedented. i don t believe he will be able to change that. martha: when you look back at the history in this administration through gates and panetta and then hagel, each one has expressed some very strong disgruntlement after sitting
the democrat base vote in 2010 that allowed the republicans to get in and jerry manneder the hell out of these states and make it impossible for democrats to win statewide and diminish the power of minority voters of big cities, how did they get away if people didn t vote? well, there were probably a variety of reasons why most democrats didn t vote for a lot of democrats didn t vote in 2010. maybe a little fatigue from 2008, the economic situation, disgruntlement with the bank bailouts and things like that. and remember, you had that sort of surging tea party movement in 2010. well, now people have had a chance to look at the tea party a little bit, and some of their representatives, and they don t really like what they see. i agree with michael. i think you re going to get a hybrid turnout this year. well, let s see. as i mentioned, republicans are gearing up for a second assault on voting rights in 2014. in 2013, republicans more than look at the map there. three dozen state

legislature there is a code to the story, which i teased there and is extraordinary. this week, after the elections, the state senate will reorganization after this week s elections and the republican leader is tom caine jr., this is the son of tom caine sr., chris christie s mentor. chris christie tried to take out tom caine jr. this week. why? because he for a couple of reasons. one is he was unhappy that tom caine was responsible for the republican legislative effort. because of a feud with steve sweeney, norcross ally, he tried to take out steve sweeney, spent a lot of money in that, and there was a lot of disgruntlement because if that money was spent in a couple of other key districts, christie might have had a majority in the senate. so this is amazing. tom caine jr. s crime in chris christie s eyes was trying to elect republicans. he was going after democrats who helped chris christie and he
