There are big plans afoot for the Northeast Louisiana Children s Museum.
Museum Director Melissa Saye and Monroe Mayor Friday Eliis have announced via Facebook that the museum will move from its present location in downtown Monroe to a larger building to be constructed at Forsythe Park.
The museum, at 323 Walnut St., was founded in 1998 by Saye and Martha Ryan and has outgrown its current space.
The new museum will take the place of the R.D. Swayze Natatorium, a large swimming pool in the center of the park which has been closed for over two decades.
There is a historic pool building in the front of that piece of land, and that will be saved, Saye said It s a historic building, so that structure is not being torn down. It s just the pool itself that will be demolished.
The two schoolteachers had hoped to put their museum in the park from the beginning, Saye said. It just lends itself to families and to a museum, Saye said. There are successful children s museums all over the country in the middle of a park, so we thought it was an ideal location. It s just a great spot.
Design and construction still a long way off
