(File) Print The Village in La Jolla is losing two businesses: Karl Strauss Brewing Co. at 1044 Wall St. and San Diego Fly Rides bike shop at 7444 Girard Ave. Karl Strauss has operated in La Jolla for more than 25 years but closed the location Jan. 11. “We have some bittersweet news to share we have closed our La Jolla brewpub,” a notice on its website reads. “Our lease has expired and the difficult decision was made not to renew it. The support we’ve gotten from you during the pandemic has been incredible. For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Print The COVID-19 pandemic continued to cast a shadow as the La Jolla Village Merchants Association approved its strategic plan for the coming year during its Jan. 13 meeting, its first of 2021. The move followed a lengthy brainstorming session during the group’s December meeting. Many of the overarching goals remain from previous years organizational excellence, merchant education and engagement, design and ambience, and marketing and events but this time with modifications for COVID-19. For example, in exploring ways to increase revenue, the board is looking at virtual events and non-event fundraisers, including online silent auctions and selling La Jolla-branded items such as puzzles and coloring books. Historically, the group would hold in-person community events as fundraisers and to encourage support for local businesses.

Print Following a Dec. 16 ruling and a clarification the next day from a San Diego County Superior Court judge that coronavirus-related restrictions limiting restaurants to takeout service were no longer applicable, several La Jolla restaurants reopened for onsite dining service. Restaurants, along with several other businesses, were asked to close their doors Dec. 7 to in-person dining after the state enacted regional closures based on the region’s hospital intensive care capacity dropping below 15 percent. Judge Joel Wohlfeil ruled in a case filed by adult entertainment clubs that the state and county had not provided sufficient evidence that restaurants and live entertainment venues operating with safety measures in place contributed to the spread of COVID-19.

(File) Print With more and more people seeking outdoor activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, like visiting La Jolla landmarks such as The Cove and the Children’s Pool, the La Jolla Village Merchants Association is looking at how to attract those visitors to local shopping opportunities. “This has been a crazy year … and as bad as it can get for all of us, the ocean is right there, the weather is beautiful. We should be happy to be in this community,” LJVMA President Brett Murphy said during the board’s annual strategic planning meeting Dec. 9 online.
