BFUHS HVAC system faces costly repairs

Like us on Facebook.   WESTMINSTER — The air system at Bellows Falls Union High School needs more than $244,000 in “high priority” repairs soon to bring it up to code, with another almost $1 million needed in the future, according to a lengthy engineering report recently made public. The study of the heating and air ventilation system at the high school was requested last year because of indoor air quality and public health concerns raised during the coronavirus pandemic. The report praised some of the work done to filter the school’s air during the height of the pandemic, but it recommended installing an ultra-violet germicidal irradiation system, at a cost of about $477,000.

BFUHS appointment sparks conflict of interest discussion

Like us on Facebook.   WESTMINSTER — A request from a Westminster man to fill a vacancy on the Bellows Falls Union High School board prompted a lengthy discussion about the potential for conflict of interest. Ian Sbardellati attended the board’s virtual meeting Monday evening and asked to be appointed to fill a three-year term that has been vacant for more than a year. Sbardellati would need to run for the seat next year if he wants to stay on the board. Sbardellati said he has one child in the high school and another in the Bellows Falls Middle School, heading for the high school.

School director Terry apologizes for school outburst

Like us on Facebook.   WESTMINSTER — Bellows Falls Union High School board member Jason Terry apologized Monday night for his verbal outburst last month at the school principal, saying he was just trying to protect his son. “I would like to apologize for my behavior,” he said. “My passion got the best of me.” “On March 23rd I was involved in a shouting match at Bellows Falls Union High School with Principal (Christopher) Hodsden and I own that. I found out recently that there were people at the high school who felt uncomfortable by that confrontation, and to anyone who feels this way you have my unequivocal apology. This will never happen again,” Terry said.

Officials revise WNESU budget figures -- downward

BELLOWS FALLS — What a difference 24 hours makes . Officials from the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union released new overall budget figures that were dramatically different from from budget figures discussed Monday night at a meeting of the Bellows Falls Union High School. At that time, a BFUHS budget increase of 11 percent was projected. Now the various budgets of the different schools in the union look like they will be close to level funded. Superintendent Christopher Pratt and Business Manager Flora Pagan said they spent the entire day Tuesday working on the budget with other district officials, not so much cutting things, but re-aligning the budget without the state education finance system, eFinance.
