Schools raise concerns as Ducey vows to uphold ban on mask mandates

July 28, 2021 PHOENIX – As schools begin to open for the fall semester, the state’s top education official is frustrated by Gov. Doug Ducey’s refusal to impose a mask mandate – defying new guidance from the CDC to wear masks indoors and in public, even if vaccinated. “This did cause more of a disruption,” Kathy Hoffman, Arizona superintendent for public instruction, told Arizona PBS on Wednesday, “and I have to ask, why? What is the purpose of questioning these evidence-based practices?” In a statement Tuesday, Ducey said Arizona’s month-old law banning mask and vaccination mandates, as well as vaccine passports, will remain in place. His statement followed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated guidance for Americans living in any county with substantial to high transmission rates. UA College of Medicine-Phoenix Students Possibly Exposed To COVID-19

Updated: Tuesday, July 6, 2021 - 3:35pm The University of Arizona’s College of Medicine in Phoenix has informed students and staff they may have been exposed to COVID-19 during an orientation event last week. In a Monday email, the college said a vaccinated individual became symptomatic during new student orientation last week and later tested positive for COVID. The college is unsure how many students and staff are impacted, but advises them to assume they were exposed. The college also sent recommendations of self-isolation and quarantine for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Protecting the health and wellbeing of our students, faculty, staff, colleagues and community is our top priority, the college said in a statement to KJZZ. We will continue to monitor the situation.
