Science Betrayed The propaganda infecting K–12 science curricula, especially on the environment, won’t go away.

It is a sad irony that the teaching of science in American schools is so unscientific. In a more rational world, children would learn about nature and a mode of inquiry the scientific method that would awaken them to the awe, fascination, and surprise that the universe should inspire. Instead, the chronic problems afflicting K–12 education and the growing politicization of science have pushed us ever further from that ideal.
Science has been misused and poorly taught for centuries. Aristocrats in the United Kingdom espoused eugenics, Soviet Communists embraced Lysenkoism, and theists around the world credit the theory of Intelligent Design. The Racine Unified School District is considering launching a new charter school, the Racine Scholars Academy, in 2021. Fifty-two years ago, Racine was selected to be part of the largest experiment in the history of education. Already seeing gains from the fast-growing Head Start program, educational leaders in the War on Poverty, proposed a massive experiment into what educational strategies worked best in grades K-3. Ten different approaches were identified to address the needs of the âculturally disadvantaged.â Each model had 4-8 sites, with control groups. The ten different educational models fell into three categories.
1. Affective Skills Model: This model, the Psychodynamic approach, considers social and emotional goals to be key for optimal development of the whole child.
