The remains of a Kansas priest who is being considered for sainthood by the Roman Catholic Church for his ministry during the Korean War have been identified, U.S. military officials said. The Rev. Emil Kapaun, of Pilsen, Kansas, died on May 23, 1951, as a prisoner of war during the Korean War. The Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency of the Defence Department said his remains were identified Tuesday. Kapaun was an army chaplain in World War II and the Korean War. He was captured on Nov. 2, 1950, near Unsan, North Korea, while tending to soldiers. He continued to minister to fellow prisoners until he died of pneumonia, the Defence Department said.

Emil Kapaun identified Remains of Medal of Honor recipient Father Emil Kapaun identified By KWCH staff | March 5, 2021 at 4:16 PM EST - Updated March 5 at 4:16 PM WASHINGTON (KWCH) - The remains of Kansas native, Father Emil Kapaun, a man recognized for his ministry and service during World War II and the Korean War, were identified, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and the Catholic Diocese of Wichita confirmed. Moran released the following statement after receiving news from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency that the remains of Father Emil Kapaun were identified: “This evening I was notified that the remains of Marion County-native Father Emil Kapaun, a priest of the Diocese of Wichita, have been identified. Father Kapaun served as an Army Chaplain during WWII and the Korean War, and was taken as a Prisoner of War in 1951. He continued to minister to Americans as a POW before passing away on May 23, 1951.
