For a vacation home situated on a secluded lake, designer Gregory Carmichael of
GCID sought to create a “stylish, welcoming, and multi-purpose family compound that would be enjoyed today and for generations to come.” And he did just that, for an empty nester couple who wanted a lake house getaway that doubled as a “gathering place on the site of the simple cabin where they spent summers raising their children.”
The final product is a 12,000-square-foot property that boasts three freestanding structures, which includes a rustic main house, a guest cabin that fits up to four people, and a whimsical beach house (which also sleeps four guests) meant for lakeside entertaining.
Modular furniture is a lifesaver no matter if you live in a one-bedroom (that’s really a studio with wobbly plywood pretending to be a wall) or a sprawling estate with a pool house. Think of it as Build-A-Bear for furniture like sofas, bookshelves, and even bed frames. As someone who’s had to carry (and pivot) a traditional couch up four flights of cramped stairs and sell a too-big bed frame that wouldn’t fit into her next space, modular.
This ABD Studio–Designed Vacation Home Is Like Grown-Up Summer Camp

Martis Camp, a private gated community in Truckee, California, backs up to the Tahoe National Forest. “You can literally leave from the back door and go on a 45-minute hike,” says designer Brittany Haines of ABD Studio. “The clients even found a bear inside once, eating bacon straight from their refrigerator.” That would be Claire and Holden Spaht, who envisioned a sophisticated and modern but also laid-back getaway for them and their two teenagers when they hired Haines to design a vacation home in Martis Camp in 2015.
