Tensions Ease Over Britain-France Fishing Spat - New Delhi Times - India s Only International Newspaper

May 7, 2021 Share Tensions between Britain and France regarding fishing rights eased late Thursday as Britain withdrew two naval ships from the waters around the British island of Jersey where French fishermen had staged a protest. Around two dozen French trawlers sailed to the island to demonstrate early Thursday, setting off flares and displaying banners demanding access to Jersey waters. The French fishermen said they were being prevented from accessing the waters around the British territory that lies just off the northern French coast. “We come today because we have always fished in the waters there. We have always fished here, and then overnight, they take away all our fishing rights,” French trawlerman Ludovic Lazaro, who was among those taking part in the demonstration, told Agence France-Presse.

France sends police patrol boats to Jersey as Brexit fisheries row deepens

France has despatched two patrol boats to Jersey as tensions continued to rise in the dispute over post-Brexit fishing rights. Agence France-Presse reported the two police vessels had been sent after Britain deployed a pair of Royal Navy vessels to the Channel Island. Earlier, dozens of French fishing boats gathered off Jersey’s capital, St Helier, amid fears they were preparing to blockade the harbour. Jersey’s external relations minister, Ian Gorst, said he would be speaking to the French fishermen in an attempt to defuse the worsening row. “It’s important that we respond to threats, but the answer to this solution is to continue to talk and diplomacy,” he told BBC News.
