The entrance foyer at Diller Scofidio & Renfro’s proposed Centre for Music
The City of London’s jinxed £288m Centre for Music project has been scrapped.
The City Corporation made the announcement yesterday afternoon, along with a pledge to launch an international design competition to find an architect to spruce up the Barbican Centre instead.
The concert hall scheme, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro after a previous international competition, had been looking shaky for some time. The most recent doubts were cast last month when Simon Rattle, the conductor for whom it was being built, announced he was leaving the London Symphony Orchestra to return to Germany.
Plans for Barbican concert hall by Diller Scofidio & Renfro axed
Plans for the pyramidal Centre for Music by Diller Scofidio & Renfro in London have been scrapped, with a major renewal of the nearby Barbican estate set to take place instead.
The concert hall designed by US studio Diller Scofidio & Renfro with British firm Sheppard Robson was planned as the new home for the London Symphony Orchestra.
However, the City of London Corporation has now axed plans in favour of a revamp of the adjacent Barbican estate as part of the capital s Covid-19 recovery plan. Unprecedented circumstances spark cancellation
The Centre for Music was first revealed in 2017 when Diller Scofidio + Renfro was selected as the winner of an international competition for its design.

Now, the situation couldn’t be more different.
On Thursday, just weeks after Rattle announced he would leave London in 2023 to take the reins at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, London officials announced that plans for the new hall had been scrapped. Rattle had been the driving force behind the project.
