Why Scottish pupils disinterest in thriving sector doesn t compute

Digital pioneers push vision for a new type of classroom

IT SEEMS incredible in an age of Artificial Intelligence, supercomputers and smart technology but in Scotland the subject of computer science is in a perilous state in schools. Despite having a flourishing digital technology sector and excellent courses at college and university, not enough pupils are taking up the subject - meaning there could be a serious shortfall in homegrown talent to sustain the industry. Not only are there not enough pupils but there are so few teachers the subject isn’t even taught in every school. Infact, the number of Scottish pupils studying computer science since the turn of this century has plummeted from 20,000 to barely 10,000.
