SOMERSET The Council Oak considered to be the geographic center of town, and so named for its significance to the Wampanoags has fallen.
Friday s high winds proved to be too much for the tree, located on the property of St. Thomas More Church. According to a Spectator article from 2015, the tree was believed to be 400 to 500 years old.
According to members of the Pokanoket tribe, the white oak tree was where Wampanoags held meetings, both to make decisions and to pray. The tree is considered to be a sacred site.
The Massasoit, or chief of all chiefs, would come to the site to listen to his people s concerns.
