rammed it through the senate bush got whatever he wants. there s a great new republic article about how bush sold the tax cuts and what he did was he is on a permanent campaign. he went to swing districts. talked about the need for a tax cut. he floated the idea of reconciliation from the very beginning so it loomed over the senate s head and lo and behold got 62 votes for it. obama has not done that. unfortunately, he has not been part of the process. he s been hands off with congress and now you have people like bruce bailey saying that the congress doesn t fear obama. well, that s not going to get legislative action if you leave it up to 534 members. george bush, and i m not saying this is good at all i didn t like it at all but george w. bush and his team had contempt for congress. oh, yeah. congress worked for them. they went to congress and they told denis hastert what to do. they told frist what to do. they got everything they wanted. i don t think that s
necessary. i don t think it s necessary either but on the other side of it barack obama doesn t tell them anything. i ve had one democrat after another come on this show and, mika, we ve heard it time and time again, what do you think about the obama health care plan? they go, what is it? he won t tell us what he wants. he won t lead. why? why doesn t he lead? why doesn t he tell democrats in congress this is where we re going. follow me. he needs to tell that to the country. that s the problem. the problem isn t congress is a symptom not the problem. the problem is the president needs to be out there saying these are the specific things we need to get done and they re going to get done. now we have ourselves in a big hole and we have to get out of it. this is what i m going to fight for and i m going to fight to the end. until it gets done. i still think i think the good thing about the scott brown election is it happened a year before the equivalent happened to clinton.
thursday afternoon or thursday evening. we would rush in for the first bell and the second the last bell rang we would run home. and they didn t even rent apartments. i lived in my office. i never understood this until i moved up to washington last year. outside of congress and there are a couple of people who i had scuffled with, one of them that went after brother buchanan and i took the attack very personally, and i was about to write something very nasty about him. then i went to pick up my first grade girl and there he was with his first grade girl. i said to my wife, i can t be nasty to him now. everybody lived together. it forced you to disagree without being disagreeable. my father served in the senate and i don t remember a night someone wasn t stopping off on our home to have a cocktail with my parents, may stay for dinner if their spouse wasn t talking in town. you knew each other better. there was still partisanship and it wasn t like this game.
anniversary of the massive and still contentious $787 billion economic stimulus package. last year president obama signed the bill after it passed congress almost entirely along party lines and since then the plan has grown only more controversial. democrats point to cbo estimates that say the stimulus helped create or save at least 2 million jobs but critics question that math and point to an unemployment rate that has soared past the administration s own projections. white house press secretary robert gibbs says the current economic situation reflects just how deeply the recession hit. i think people are frustrated with job growth. again, i think i ve used this statistic before. if you take how many jobs were lost in the most severe recession i think in most people s membories, the early 1980s, add that to the job loss of a recession in the early 1990s, and then add that to the
