senator mccain is so interesting because he is a veteran of the vietnam war. but to so many americans he feels as if he s almost an honorary member of the greatest generation. he seems a more of a world war ii type character than one from the decades past. i remember talking to him about it sounds as though we had a book club which we did not. but there was we used to talk about hemingway which he did. but we also talked about her man woke. the great novelist who two marvelous books, winds of war and the war and remembrance and the protag annist played by robert meacham in the 80s, a naval captain named pug henry and i remember suggesting to mccain once in an interview that his father struck me as a pug
nobody ever raised that question again. mccain won the primary and general elections. as a freshman congressman quickly developed a reputation for not necessarily towing the party line. civil war broke out in lebanon and by the fall of 1983, the situation was a powder keg. u.s. peace keeping forces were in harms way. opposing his own party s president, mccain sided with majority of the democrats in calling for the withdrawal of troops deployed in lebanon. he has sort of made this a hallmark of his career to try to be a truth teller on all things foreign policy and the 83 vote is a first step along that way. in arizona this is man we ll all want to watch. now elected to the senate seat of retiring barry goldwater. after two terms in the house, mccain won election to the senate.
there had been a huge vacuum in washington. it s not clear who, if anyone, is going to fill this vacuum any time soon and i think there is this extra stomach punch that some people feel tonight because there s this feeling that john mccain was one of the last people holding up a guardrail. and trying with everything he had to hold up one of these political guardrails, so i think as we remember john mccain throughout the week it ll be interesting to see other politicians and hear the stories of john mccain, how that will impact them going forward as we try to sort of heal this political moment that we re in and i think a lot of people don t like. chuck, stand by, we also have
the fact is she s a dynamic president with executive experience thoo she s exactly what washington needs. mccain was old and been through cancer the idea of president palin was a real possibility head sboing into the fall of 2008, the race was neck and neck then on september 15th meltdown. the american financial system is rocked to its foundation as top wall street institutions topple. just before the first scheduled presidential debate, mccain decided to suspend his campaign to hammer out a deal on the economy. in a meeting at the white house he was largely silent while barack obama offered more input in the conversation. as the economy cratered, the campaign struggled to maintain moment politically they felt they
