visit esd.ny.gov my next guest wrote that the white house didn t break hope hicks overnight. joining me now, washington correspondent with new york magazine. so good to see you, olivia. and i know you wrote hope hicks wanted to leave when she was far enough removed from her own scab d
a bit. obviously it wasn t a good week for the white house. i agree with everyone else in saying that. but i do being tthink the fact john are kelly can make a self-deprecating joke about himself and about his job, i think it shows that he does have confidence in his role and i think that he is doing the best that he possibly can in this white house. the one thing i do want to point out, there are seasoned professionals in the white house, just not in the headlines. mercedes schlapp is a good example. do you think she will take hope hicks place? i think they would be smart to name her as communications director, yes. let me say it is not just exhausting to witness, it is dangerous. there was a time when we thought that the generals would somehow be the grown ups in the room and would protect us from donald trump s worst instincts especially national security. john kelly i think has reinforced all of trump s worst
is the question everybody is asking. what about the washington post story, lauren, that calls youts goi outgoing hope hicks the closest west wing confidant and she s often acted as a therapist. do you think there is a link between hope hicks o resignati and all this turmoil? i do. i think hope hicks and frankly probably just had enough. i think it is important to remember about hope in particular that she worked for the president for a long time. and she was somebody that was out there even as early as 2014 saying, you know, look, donald trump is serious about running for the white house. and people didn t take her seriously back then. so she has been with the president for a long time. and i do think it is important to remember going through a grueling campaign, i served on a presidential general election campaign, it is exhausting. and then do that and go into a white house that is unorthodox
he would have had giuliani or chr christie who could lead from knowing the president understanding how to deal with washington, not everything is about how the books are going to be made. things are changing and we have to change with the time and this is what the democratic party needs to do as well. we ll see who might come next and then we ll have you back on to debate it. meanti meantime, i appreciate all of you. coming up next, she has been described as having been president trump s security blanket. how much personal impact will the departure of hope hicks have on the president? insights next. thank you. imagine if the things you bought every day. earned you miles to get to the places you really want to go. with the united mileageplus explorer card, you ll get a free checked bag. two united club passes.
this is something he promised to do and this is one of the policies that he was very passionate about. for a long time. let s move to the white house which as we all know has been marred in negative headlines ranging from jared kushner losing his top security clear answer, hope hicks resigns, chaos on overall. reince priebus came to the president s defense this morning particularly over the reports that he was angry and unglued when he announced his tariffs proposal. here it is. what the president does and he writes about it even in his own books is he puts rivals around him intellectually. they fight it out. the media covers the fight. but ultimately the decision is made. the drama is there, but that is how the president makes decisions and that process while different has gotten to good results. jeff, you cover the white house. is this portrayal accurate? well, there is nobody who knows that better than reince priebus. i mean he was right in the middle ofdays s chaos for six
