Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 29

I was away at the beach most of today and I had a lot of emotions when I got back and looked at the notifications on my phone. I’m sure most of you are feeling the same, so I won’t bother sharing my feelings. But what we can do is focus on the players who are in the organization, including a great effort by the new-look I-Cubs tonight.
Iowa Cubs
Ryan Meisinger had two scoreless innings and
Tony Cingrani tossed one. The save went to
Ben Leeper, who allowed a two-out single in the top of the ninth but no other baserunners in his inning of work. Leeper struck out one.

Iowa starter
Matt Swarmer had a no-hitter until one out in the sixth inning, when he surrendered a double. After an error and a triple, he left the game with the score tied 2-2. The final line on Swarmer was two runs, both unearned, on two hits over 5.2 innings. Swarmer struck out six and walked one.
The Mud Hens scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of
Tony Cingrani and
Dakota Mekkes, which turned out to be the difference in the game. Two I-Cubs errors contributed to the defeat. Mekkes got the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit over two-thirds of an inning. He did not have a walk or a strikeout.
In a landslide, you picked Iowa Cubs reliever
Ben Leeper as your choice for the BCB Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Year! I guess when you don’t give up a hit all month, you’ll impress people. (That’s not quite what Leeper did as he gave up some hits in Double-A before his promotion. But he did not give up a hit in Triple-A all month.)
By the way, if any corporation wants to sponsor the BCB Cubs Minor League Awards, let me know. And don’t tell Al or SB Nation. But the Acme BCB Minor League Player of the Month Award has a nice ring to it, if the Acme Corporation would like to sell products to someone other than Wile E. Coyote.
