SENTIENT outclassed stablemate CRIMSON by three-quarter lengths, clocking 1:56.2 in winning the Bonnie Blue Flag Trophy at nine furlongs and 25 yards at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Hunting back-to-back wins at the distance after rebounding to form on New Year s Day in 1:55.2, CRIMSON charged at his stablemate after going past ROY ROGERS a furlong out.
However, SENTIENT, a grade-one winner of September s Chairman s Trophy, who had tracked ROY ROGERS before taking over approaching the home turn, stayed on strongly with Dane Nelson to hold his stablemate at bay.
The combination of title-chasing jockey, Dane Nelson, and champion trainer, Anthony Nunes, dominated Saturday s 11-race card at Caymamas Park.
Nelson won four races to reduce Anthony Thomas lead to one atop the jockeys standings and Nunes extended his stakes lead over Wayne DaCosta, saddling three winners, including CHANDRA S LAW and ALIMONY, in the divided Starters Trophy for two-year-olds.
With three meets to close the season, Nunes appears a safe bet to retain the crown he won last season, snapping DaCosta s 13-year reign as an 18-time champion.
Nelson opened his four-timer aboard BLACK ROYALTY for trainer Richard Todd in the second before making all with CHANDRA S LAW in division one of the four-furlong straight Starters Trophy.
