And i want to thank you for coming tonight. Im a librarian at mid Manhattan Library. Im happy to present john mcwhorter. Were lucky here at mid Manhattan Library because john has come more than once. He has been very kind aboutthat this is his third visit. Tonight he will speak about his most recent book, talking back, talking black. Truth of about americas lingua franca. He is a associate professor of Columbia University where he teaches linguistics, American History and africanamerican studies. That it would be too expensive to have a womens component in the army. This has come for me to anybody this week . It was nonsense then. Its nonsense now. Whether it applies to women or whether it applies to our comrades in arms who are transgender. One of my personal favorites alfred cashier or jenne ha jars. Albert cashier lived 50 years after his service in the civil war as a man. His comrades from this regiment kept it secret that he was biologically female. They encouraged him to live as a man. In a nursing home he was forced into Womens Clothing and his health deteriorated rapidly which shouldnt surprise anybody and he only lived a couple more years after that. He was buried as alfred cashier, a man with full military honors. We thank you so much for coming out tonight and taking this trip through her story with us. Its very much attribute to goldwater. In 1960 he felt that the conservative movement and the Republican Party had been compromised by the new deal, and a somebody new to put together a blueprint on where the party and the movement ought to go. Thats what conscience of a conservative was. I think every, everybody since then who has looked at the book and said this is it, this is the manifesto. My thought, i thought i do honor it that way because in a way i think were facing some of the same kind of questions today that the party or the conservative movement has been compromised by populist layer. This is our final panel for the history conference on the political legacy of Newt Gingrich, arguably one of the most influential speakers of the house in the past hundred years. I think theres no dispute that were all living the legacy of Newt Gingrich, so i will turn it over to Jacob Strauss who is our chair for the panel from the Congressional Research service. You guys put on a great conference. Its wonderful to get away from our desks and talk to people about all kinds of subjects related to congress so im very happy to be here.
