More than half of all squid landings in the Northeast come from Rhode Island. But last year, as a result of the pandemic, some Rhode Island fleets saw earnings dip by 30 percent.
Jason Didden, a fishery management specialist at the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, says that so far in 2021, total longfin landing are off to a slow start at less than 5 million pounds landed, compared to this time last year when around 11 million pounds had been landed. Illex season typically gets started in May and 2021 squid quotas are the same as 2020: 23,400 metric tons for longfin and 30,000 metric tons for illex. (The illex quota was expected to be reviewed in May.)

From birthday cake and locally-produced hampers to humorous odes, the people of Gawsworth had a balloon-filled couple of days celebrating 10 years of their volunteer-run community shop.
The birthday celebrations kicked off on March 10, with customers treated to a slice of birthday cake before being entered into a prize draw to win goodies from local suppliers including Chatwins Bakery, Forest Gin, Granelli’s Ice Cream, Spearings Butchers and Wincle Brewery.
A proper birthday volunteer bash (fingers are crossed for a ceilidh) is planned for later in the year, an event that usually happens in local village pub The Harrington Arms.
COLUMBIA - While on a book tour in 2013, Alex George, learned how much the Columbia community loves festivals. For example, thousands attend the annual True/False Festival. And that sparked an idea for George to create a book festival in Columbia. Writers spend most of their time at a desk, sort of staring at a computer screen and it was kind of nice being in front of a crowd and talking to people and engaging with them, George said, the founder of the Unbound Book Festival.
George got a group of local educators, librarians, book-sellers and writers together as his starting festival committee. They met and had no idea what [they] were doing, said George. They gave each other an 18-month deadline to put the first festival together in 2016.

New groups of individuals including transportation workers and public safety workers will be eligible to book vaccine appointments starting March 15, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced March 1.
Murphy also increased the number of people allowed in general indoor gatherings to 25 and said that restaurants can now serve up to 50% capacity indoors.
Pat Linfante, the Associate Vice President for Public Safety, said the news was encouraging for workers at Seton Hall such as SHUfly and SafeRide drivers or other on-campus public safety officers.
