A NASA flight director is one of the most coveted careers at the space agency. There are far fewer flight directors than astronauts but they are at the forefront of human spaceflight without ever leaving Earth.
Flight directors are in charge of Mission Control Center at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, overseeing human spaceflight. They lead teams of flight controllers and engineers, in the U.S. and international partners, all in real-time as astronauts are living and working in space. When there are hurricanes, power outages and world events down on Earth, flight directors must tune all that out and focus on the task at hand, making sure astronauts can safely spacewalk, dock at the space station and, in a few years, land on the moon.

NASA has selected four new flight directors to oversee operations of the International Space Station, the agency announced.
These individuals join an elite group of 101 people who have worked in Houston s Mission Control Center leading flight controllers, engineers and other professionals at NASA and its international partners.
“Our flight directors are at the forefront of everything that humans do in space,” NASA Flight Operations Director Steve Koerner said in a Monday news release. “We place a huge responsibility upon them individually to take any necessary action to ensure the safety of our astronauts, the safety of the spacecraft, and to accomplish the mission. These four join a storied group of individuals. We’re excited to have them

NASA has selected four new additions to its cadre of flight directors to oversee operations of the International Space Station. The newest inductees in the class of 2021 are Diane Dailey, Chloe Mehring, Fiona Turett, and Brandon Lloyd.
They will work in the Mission Control Center of NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston to lead teams of flight controllers, engineers, and countless professionals, both agencywide and internationally. Following a rigorous training program that includes both technical knowledge and leadership skills, they will be ready to oversee human spaceflight missions to, from, and aboard the space station, as well as the lunar missions of NASAs Artemis program.
