LOS ANGELES, May 13 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - In mid-April, nearly 150 local environmentalists marched to the gates of Greenidge Generation, a bitcoin mining facility in upstate New York, in a last-ditch effort to block its expansion.
Their objection: that the creation of the cryptocurrency, an energy-intensive process in which computers compete to solve mathematical puzzles, may harm efforts to limit global warming.
Three days later, the planning board in the small town of Torrey voted 4-1 to allow Greenidge Generation to more than double the number of machines it has mining bitcoin.

A new law in Missoula County might help write the future of cryptocurrency regulation in the U.S. In February, county officials adopted what they believe to be the first permanent zoning policy for cryptocurrency mining operations, which requires them to generate renewable energy and stay clear of residential areas.
Jason Vaughan used to be the site manager for Hyperblock, a Bitcoin mining company in Bonner, MT that closed last year. He says walking into the 250,000 square-foot building was almost like stepping into a giant erector set.
“Most of it’s, you know, steel and metal. There s a lot of noise from the fans of all the machines and whatnot, but there’s just likehere s hundreds of thousands of little blinking lights and whatnot.”

MISSOULA â Fearing a range of unintended consequences and an economic setback, Missoula County has drafted two letters to Gov. Greg Gianforte imploring him to veto legislation heading to his desk.
The separate letters ask Gianforte to veto HB 112, which will require athletes to participate under the sex they were assigned at birth while the second, SB 257, would prohibit local governments from imposing carbon penalties, fees or taxes.
Missoula County has no intention of imposing such penalties, though the billâs ambiguity could hinder other local efforts to address carbon emissions and climate change.
