And those in crisis don t always need to be hospitalized. That s part of the philosophy behind a state-funded program that brings free crisis care to people regardless of whether they have medical insurance. The pandemic has increased the need for mental health care. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the rate of U.S. adults who reported symptoms of depression and anxiety rose from 10% to about 40% from 2019 to 2020. Sleep disorders and substance abuse were more prevalent in 2020 than prior years as well, according to research from the nonprofit that conducts health policy analysis. Isolation and job loss has exacerbated mental health problems.

Springfield’s hotel occupancy rate in January was 27.2%, the lowest monthly rate ever recorded since statistics began being kept almost three decades ago, and the rate was 16 percentage points lower than the same month in 2020.
The statistics were emblematic of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on Springfield as a travel and tourism destination.
“It’s been devastating over the past year,” said Scott Dahl, director of the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau.

SPRINGFIELD â In order to help reduce the pressure on local hospital emergency departments, Memorial Behavioral Health has opened a center where adults experiencing emotional distress can go to for a safe and calming environment where they can get help.
Dubbed The Living Room, the center is at 710 N. Eighth St. in Springfield and is open from noon to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The entrance is at Eighth and Miller streets.
