Historical sexual assault allegation against Labor frontbencher referred to AFP

A woman who recently took her own life after having made historical rape allegations against a current Morrison Cabinet minister would have been "furious" with how the ABC's Four Corners had approached the coverage of the issue, says a close friend.
On Friday, the ABC's Four Corners had reported about a letter which included the allegation from the now deceased woman.
The letter alleges that she had been raped in 1988, at the age of 16 years old.
Close friend of the woman, Dhanya Mani - a former Liberal adviser, spoke to Sky News about the issue.
Ms Mani, who launched a site called 'Changing Our Headline' in 2019 to provide a confidential place for victims of sexual harassment and assault, said the woman reached out to her through that platform.
Ms Mani said the family of the deceased woman, who took her own life in June 2020, is being retraumatised with how the ABC's program had covered the issue.

The alleged rape of former Liberal Party staffer Brittany Higgins has raised many questions about how sexual assault gets reported.
Members of the Morrison government have repeatedly stressed the appropriate response to allegations of sexual assault is to go to the police.
Another former staffer Dhanya Mani, who alleges she was indecently assaulted while working in NSW state politics, says she received a similar response from senior Liberal figures.
In both cases, the complainants did not want the police involved at the time of their first disclosure. Higgins initially spoke to police in 2019, but then withdrew her complaint, because she felt it would put her career in jeopardy. Mani says she did not want to go through the police process because it would be “traumatising […] it doesn’t empower us”.
