Global climate change has taken its toll on famous Dhanauri wetlands in Greater Noida this winter with a lesser number of migratory birds flocking here, according to the latest report of the Asian Waterbird Census(AWC). It is part of the International Waterbird Census (IWC).

Sarus cranes likely did not breed in Dhanauri this year due to the absence of nests or chicks. Birders blame pesticides, construction, and heavy rainfall as possible reasons. The use of pesticides on nearby farms and construction activities around Dhanauri might have affected the breeding. The region also received heavy rainfall, which could have impacted the natural hydrology of Dhanauri. Sarus cranes are included in the IUCN's red list in the “vulnerable” category.
