The JVP yesterday alleged that the government had chosen to muscle Facebook and social media instead of controlling the prices of essential food items.
JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, addressing the media at the party headquarters in Pelawatte said: “The government should be controlling the prices of essential goods in the market. But it has allowed traders to fleece consumers and is busy devising ways and means of throttling social media.

The Pharmacology Section of the Ayurvedic Department had approved the untested, homemade herbal brew widely called ‘Dhammika peniya’ though it was yet to receive clearance from ‘Ethical Committee’ of the Ayrvedic Department without being subjected to a proper scientific study, co-cabinet spokesperson Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said yesterday (22)
Dr. Pathirana emphasised that ‘Dhammika Peniya’ could be subjected to what he called placebo control randomized double-blind clinical trial once the ‘Ethical Committee’ cleared it.
The Minister said so when a journalist raised the issue at yesterday’s post-cabinet media briefing via zoom. The journalist asked whether the government, Kali Amma or Dhammika would be responsible in case those who take the syrup developed complications.

The National Research Council of Sri Lanka (NRC) has said that the Council is yet to receive the proposal on the syrup used for Covid-19 by Ayurvedic practitioner Dhammika Bandara from Kegalle. The Council is yet to receive the proposal by Mr. Dhammika Bandara and will take immediate action when the proposal is received, to facilitate the trial in advisory and monetary capacity, NRC Chairman Prof. Hemantha Dodampahala said in a letter yesterday to State Minister of Skills Development, Vocational Education Research and Innovation.
The talk of the town these days is all about an Ayurvedic ‘paniya’ or syrup, supposedly prepared by using some secret ingredients in addition to nutmegs and bees honey, being sought by desperate Sri Lankans, who appear to have lost faith in the government’s ability to control or curb the rapidly spreading viral infection.
We saw last week in the print and electronic media, pictures of hundreds of men and women rushing to the village of Hettimulla in Kegalle and gathering outside the high-walled residence of Kapurala-turned Ayurveda practitioner Dhammika Bandara to grab a bottle of the ‘paniya’ being touted by him as a cure for the deadly COVID-19 virus, and according to some media reports was being distributed free-of-charge.
