Either the Shoals’ incredible studio legacy or stars today going there to record in search of that country-soul mojo. Grammy winning folk and rock musician Jason Isbell, a former Shoals resident, has also put major media outlets back on the case. Elsewhere in the region, several years ago Athens had a moment. The band Alabama Shakes’ rise to fame caused countless music fans outside the state to locate the city of Athens, Alabama on a map for the first time in their lives. There are other examples of North Alabama music pinging in a national media way in the last decade, but those are prime examples.

(Courtesy photo) Facebook Share “Black people don’t drink coffee.” The entrepreneurs behind Dark Side - a new coffee shop located in historically African-American North Huntsville - say they were given that (eyebrow-raising) advice 18 months or so ago, as they were getting started. “And this is from very credible people,” says Devyn Keith, who in addition to being a Dark Side co-owner is Huntsville City Council president. “I think the problem for us was,” Keith, who is Black, continues, “we’ve proved that we liked the same things, in other parts of town.”
