Reparations subcommittee reviews eligibility survey results

Of the nearly 200 residents who completed the city’s reparations eligibility survey, 144 indicated they would be interested in applying for Evanston’s restorative housing program, CMO Management Analyst Tasheik Kerr said at a Thursday virtual reparations subcommittee meeting. The $400,000 program the first facet of the city’s larger reparations plan is set to be distributed in payments up to $25,000. Eligible residents can spend funds they receive from the program toward home ownership, home improvement and mortgage assistance. The highest survey response rate came from the 5th Ward, followed by former residents and then the 2nd Ward. While 407 residents completed parts of the survey, only the 198 who answered every question were counted in the subcommittee’s review.

Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre celebrates Black history with broadcast series

Dr. Elisha Hall is neither a stranger to the recording studio, nor to storytelling. He released his first instrumental album last month, and his three children often clamor for bedtime tales, which he draws from his thesis work on West African storytelling. Now he’ll bring the two passions together to make his storytelling debut on air. “Storytelling is a genre, yes,” Hall said. “But before it is a genre, it is a way of living, it is a way of being.” Hall will join Evanston’s Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre as the group kicks off its Black history project called 24/7/365: A Legacy of Greatness. The series features ten-minute broadcasts by local Black chefs, musicians, storytellers and visual artists.

Evanston food pantries and soup kitchens prepare for winter

Evanston food pantries and soup kitchens prepare for winter January 22, 2021 Navigating post-holiday lulls and cold weather complications, Evanston’s food pantries and their partner businesses will continue to serve meals to food-insecure residents this winter. Leslie Shulruff, chair of the Beth Emet Soup Kitchen, said most Evanston food pantries have been ordering their meals from restaurants instead of preparing the food themselves, given the challenges of practicing social distancing within a kitchen.  Beth Emet is currently working with eateries, including La Principal and Dengeos, at discounted rates of $5-$6 a plate. The kitchen also enlists volunteers to prepare salads and desserts at home, which has bolstered volunteer engagement while Beth Emet’s operational capacity remains limited.
