G7 scolds China, Russia; China hits back
Reuters, LONDON
The G7 nations on Wednesday scolded China and Russia, casting the Kremlin as malicious and Beijing as a bully, but beyond words there were few concrete steps aside from expressing support for Taiwan and Ukraine.
Founded in 1975 as a forum for the West’s richest nations to discuss crises such as the OPEC oil embargo, the G7 this week addressed what it perceives as the biggest threats: China, Russia and the COVID-19 pandemic.
G7 foreign ministers, in a 12,400-word communique, said that Russia was trying to undermine democracies and threatening Ukraine, while China was guilty of human rights abuses and of using its economic clout to bully others.
G7 ministers meet face-to-face after pandemic pause
AP, LONDON
Foreign ministers from the G7 wealthy industrialized nations yesterday gathered in London their first face-to-face meeting in more than two years to grapple with threats to health, prosperity and democracy.
Host country Britain has warned that the increasingly aggressive activities of Russia, China and Iran pose a challenge to democratic societies and the international rule of law.
UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Dominic Raab said Britain’s presidency of the G7 this year “is an opportunity to bring together open, democratic societies and demonstrate unity at a time when it is much needed to tackle shared challenges and rising threats.”
