Two California police officers were killed in a 24-hour span, officials say

(CNN)Two California police officers were killed while on duty in the span of 24 hours, officials said Tuesday. Detective Luca Benedetti with the San Luis Obispo Police Department was fatally shot Monday evening by a suspect in an apartment complex while police were executing a search warrant for allegedly stolen property, the department said Tuesday. Another officer, Detective Steven Orozco, was wounded during that shooting and was treated at a hospital.

Luca Benedetti, a 12-year law enforcement employee, was shot on Monday while serving a search warrant at an apartment in the California city, according to a Tuesday statement. Benedetti was one of six officers serving a search warrant for “possibly stolen properties” related to several recent burglaries.  ADVERTISEMENT The officers identified themselves before forcing open the door of the apartment, according to the Tuesday statement. The alleged gunman, Edward Zamora Giron, fired at the officers from inside the apartment, and officers returned fire before retreating.

3 Northern California residents arrested for catalytic converter thefts in SLO

San Luis Obispo Police Department SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Three residents of Northern California were arrested in San Luis Obispo for allegedly cutting off and stealing catalytic converters from parked vehicles. San Luis Obispo police received a call from a citizen who reported seeing a dark minivan in an area where the sound of metal being cut was heard. Police responded to the area and located the minivan driving and conducted a traffic stop. Police said three people were in the van as well as two catalytic converters and tools that could be used in their removal. One of the people in the van admitted to stealing the catalytic converters earlier that day, police said.

San Luis Obispo police arrest three alleged catalytic converter thieves February 25, 2021 By JOSH FRIEDMAN Following a tip from an alert resident early Wednesday morning, San Luis Obispo police reportedly caught three thieves from Northern California with four stolen catalytic converters. Shortly after 1 a.m., a 911 caller reported hearing what sounded like metal being cut in the 100 block of Mustang Drive. The witness reported seeing a dark minivan in the area with a cargo rack on the roof. The individual suspected the incident was related to recent catalytic converter thefts, police said. An officer arrived in the area, located the minivan and stopped it. Three suspects were inside the vehicle.
