Newham police boss Det Ch Supt Richard Tucker is retiring and he spoke to the Recorder about his career, his views on policing priorities and his next steps.

The borough s top police officer is named in the New Year s Honours.

In his 35 years in policing, Det Ch Supt Tucker has served in a number of roles, most of which have been in east London.
He said: “Being honoured was a complete surprise and an extremely humbling moment. My first thoughts when I heard the great news was of the day my parents dropped me off at Hendon training school on a very dark and wet evening 35 years ago.

Between April, 2018 and October, the Met’s crime figures show there were 28,767 reports of violence in Newham. There were 17 murders over the same period. Between April and October there was one.

“I’m held responsible for keeping people safe in Newham. When a young person or child loses their life, it cuts to my core,” Det Ch Supt Tucker said.
