jumping. hello and thanks for joining us tonight. i m maureen umeh. i m will thomas. people jumping from their balconies, babies tossed to people below. a terrifying ordeal for people in these greenbelt apartments. nine people hurt including children and a firefighter. 41 people are homeless. fox 5 karen gray houston picks up the story from the scene of the fire. reporter: residents who were sleeping in on a rainy saturday morning got a rude awakening, a raging fire lit up the sky with plumes of heavy black smoke. i smelled the smoke this morning and i heard people yelling and screaming so i opened the door and people were just running out. the fire broke out about 8:45 a.m. when firefighters arrived, berwyn heights was the first here. they rescued six people from the upper floors. reporter: people raced to the balcony because the interior stairwell was blocked with heavy heat and thick smoke. some opened to jump from the upper floors prior to the fire departmen
