COP26 President launches challenge to deliver net-zero tipping points in every sector
The UN High-Level Climate Champions and COP26 President Alok Sharma have today (28 January) unveiled a radical new roadmap to push the global economy towards net-zero emissions, targeting a range of near-term, sectoral tipping points to deliver decarbonisation.
Currently, corporate commitments under the Race to Zero campaign cover more than 12% of the global economy and $9.8trn in revenue
The Race to Zero Breakthroughs have been published in a special paper by the UN High-Level Climate Champions, COP26 President Alok Sharma, COP25 President Carolina Schmidt, and the UNFCCC’s Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa at the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda. It will build on the Race to Zero campaign that was launched in June 2020.

UN Climate Change News, 28 January 2021 – The UN High-Level Climate Champions, COP26 President Alok Sharma, COP25 President Carolina Schmidt, together with the UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa, today launch the Race to Zero Breakthroughs at the World Economic Forum’s Davos Agenda.
Race to Zero is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions, and investors for a healthy, resilient, zero-carbon recovery that prevents future threats, creates decent jobs, and unlocks inclusive, sustainable growth. Reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by the middle of the century is crucial to achieve the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement on climate action, with clearly defined interim goals.

London, Jan 25 (IANS) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday launched the Adaptation Action Coalition, a new international coalition to tackle the impacts of climate change.
Johnson launched the coalition in a virtual address to the Netherlands-hosted Climate Adaptation Summit, the first-ever global summit focused solely on adaptation and resilience.
Developed by the UK in partnership with Egypt, Bangladesh, Malawi, the Netherlands, Saint Lucia and the United Nations, this new coalition will work to turn international political commitments made through the United Nations Call for Action on Adaptation and Resilience into on-the-ground support for vulnerable communities.

As the world works to recover from the devastating impacts of Covid-19, we must look at how we build back sustainably. Efforts to cope with climate shocks should be at the heart of this, because even if we stopped global warming tomorrow, countries around the world, including Bangladesh, will continue to feel the impacts. Without urgent action, 100 million people are at risk of being pushed into poverty by 2030 due to the impacts of climate change, primarily in South Asia as well as Sub-Saharan Africa.
