A 112-year-old train passenger station that once served 16 rail lines in Des Moines East Village has been brought back to its original splendor, ready to welcome guests in a newly opened events center.
The Des Moines Heritage Trust renovated the former East Des Moines Union Depot, 120 E. Fifth St., for use as its headquarters and built a new a 400-person events center for weddings, corporate meetings and other private events.
The nonprofit organization formed four years ago to save the building, which was at risk of demolition as plans evolved for the burgeoning Market District, a modern urban neighborhood envisioned to have apartments, shopping and entertainment.
