these officers and their histories, because they don t necessarily have clean slates. yeah, that s absolutely right. you mentioned at the top, they were moonlighting as marshals. well, in that area, that s something that can be common for law enforcement officers as a side job, to be doing that and be serving is warrants. now, that s what we believe they were doing. at the same time, we are learning more about their background. according to local news station katc, lieutenant stafford has five pending civil lawsuits against him right now. he was also indicted for aggravated rape in 2011. officer greenhouse has been named in several lawsuits as well. also, there were two other officers on the scene that day. neither have been cleared at this point. investigators say they will follow this case wherever it takes them. and again, the colonel of the louisiana state police told me this morning, he said that these two officers tarnished their badges when they shot and killed that 6-year-old
it does two things. it protects the public from overzealous police officers and likes to protect the police officers from being accused of being violated people s civil rights. it works both ways. what could these officers possibly say, they think there s a gun in the car, and then this little boy is shot to death while sitting in that seat. we need body cameras for officers because it helps everyone. secondly, it could be justified as homicide. we thought he was trying to hit us with a car. that s going to be their only defense on that. but i think what we just saw, the superintendent of the louisiana state police, he saw the video and it s one of the most disturbing things he saw. that was a very telling sign of how disturbing this case is going to be. and a jury will potentially see that. there s no doubt the jury will see that. nothing is going to get that out. what about these officers? stafford, for example, was indicted on aggravated rape,
the two officers are behind bars charged in the young boy s murder. cnn just learned the father s condition was upgraded from critical to serier iserious. still many questions remain to how it happened and how a 6-year-old was innocently gunned down. cnn s nick valencia joining me now from louisiana. nick, what more are you learning? two very big questions in this community is why the marshalls would have chased that father into that lead end and why use lethal force? we ve been looking into the history of these police officers and according to local media reports here in the area at least one of the officers has had a history of a past run-in with the criminal justice system. in 2011, 32-year-old derrick stafford, an officer charge with the murder of 6-year-old jeremy mardis, was indict with two counts of aggravated rape. one incident from september 2000 h, another incident in 2011. those cases were eventually dismissed without prejudice.
two officers fired into the father s vehicle in the first place. now, here s what we do know. investigators say these two officers were moonlighting as marshals. they were driving marked cars and turned on their lights to get the boy s father to pull over. but he did not. will karr live from our west coast newsroom tonight. so will, what led authorities to arrest the two officers? reporter: good evening, julie. this morning, the colonel of the louisiana state police department emphatically told me that 6-year-old jeremy mardis should never have died. mardis, who his family members say is autistic, was shot five times in the head and chest. initially the officers in question say they were serving a warrant on mardis father, chris few, and few led in his suv. but now investigators say they re not sure a warrant ever even existed. the officers, norris greenhouse and derrick stafford, said few tried to back into them with the car, so they fired, unloading 18
shots in total. authorities say few did not have any weapons in the car and they re still trying to figure out why the officers turned him over in the first place. both officers turned themselves over on friday and one key piece of evidence against them, video from at least one body camera. both of those individuals, derrick stafford, and norris greenhouse, both will be booked on one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder. as i told you, we took some of the body camera footage. let me tell you something, i m not going to talk about it, but i m going to tell you this. it is the most disturbing thing i ve seen. and i will leave it at that. we re told that video will not be made public anytime in the near future, because right now, it is evidence. as for few, he s in a local hospital in serious condition, because he was shot twice. the funeral for his son, jeremy, will be held monday. it s just really hard to believe. what else do we know abo
