Danny Mandroiu netted twice to help Rovers secure a win over St Patrick s Athletic tonight.
Macdara Ferris reports from Tallaght Stadium
Champions Shamrock Rovers sent out a clear sign of intent of their desire to retain their title by beating second placed St Patrick’s Athletic 3-1 with a strong performance on Friday night. The victory - thanks to goals from Danny Mandroiu either side of a Pico Lopes header - moved them three points clear at the top of table with a game in hand over the Saints.
It was a tight enough affair in the first half which was unsurprising since the two teams came into the game level on points with only a gap of two in goal difference.

SHAMROCK ROVERS
Ahead of next week’s Europa Conference League qualifier against KF Teuta Durres, the Hoops have a tasty top of the table clash against St. Patrick’s Athletic (kick off 8pm). Rovers lead the league due to a two goal better goal difference from the Saints who have played an additional game.
“Pat s have had a good season so far,” was the assessment of Hoops Head Coach Stephen Bradley speaking to his club’s media team. “They re up and around the top and have been from the start so we know they re a good side. We know what they ll bring to Tallaght. We ve got to be ready for that and I m sure we will.

ST PATRICK’S ATHLETIC
St Patrick’s Athletic will be eyeing their second league win in a row when they welcome Drogheda United to Richmond Park on Friday night (kick-off is at 7.45pm).
The Athletic won 1-0 last time out against Derry City despite playing the last half-hour with ten-men.
Despite a good result last week, Saints boss Stephen O’Donnell is expecting a tough encounter against Drogheda. Tim Clancy is doing a great job up there. He s got a new two year deal along with Kevin Doherty and rightly so.
“They are doing an excellent job there, and we are under no illusions, it s going to be a very tough game.
