John was born Jan. 26, 1929 on a farm near Olin to William and Mabel (Schultz) Voss. He grew up on various farms around Olin where he assisted his father in farming. John graduated in 1946 from Olin High School where he enjoyed playing basketball, baseball and 4H. John married Lorna (Crain) Voss June 24, 1951. Six weeks later he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. After basic training he was sent to Japan where he was trained to be a Military Policeman and achieved the rank of CPL E4.
