Hillsborough County s jail inspection reports, filed with the New Hampshire Attorney General s office, have looked essentially identical for years.
When Hillsborough County Commissioner Toni Pappas toured the Valley Street Jail in Manchester last December, as she and fellow commissioners are required to do at least twice a year, she didn’t appear to find any cause for concern.
“I have found the condition of the facility, the security of the inmates, and the management to be in order,” Pappas wrote in an inspection report filed with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office. “The inmates are being cared for pursuant to [state law], and are appropriately supervised by trained correctional staff.”

UNITY The Sullivan County delegation has set a date later this month to make a decision on the fate of a proposed renovation of the county’s existing nursing home that is expected to cost $54 million.
Delegates set April 26 for the vote following a public hearing held in person in Newport, N.H., and via Zoom and Facebook Live on Tuesday evening.
Participants in the hearing, which included some current and former employees of the 156-bed facility that sits next to the county jail in Unity, expressed support for the project due to the nursing home’s aging infrastructure. Others noted the current low-interest rates even in the face of high costs of construction.

UNITY Sullivan County officials appear to be leaning toward a $54 million renovation of the existing county nursing home, rather than seeking to build a new one due to the higher costs of new construction.
Officials estimate an entirely new nursing home either at the county complex in Unity or elsewhere could cost somewhere between $75 million and $80 million, said Mary Bourque, the county’s director of facilities and operations, during a Monday meeting of the Executive Finance Committee held in person in Newport and also streamed on Zoom and Facebook Live.

UNITY A fifth resident of the Sullivan County nursing home has died after testing positive for COVID-19 during an ongoing outbreak at the facility, according to the administrator.
A total of 128 people have tested positive during the outbreak at the Unity nursing home, including 82 residents and 46 workers, 30 of whom have recovered and returned to work, facility administrator Ted Purdy said in a Thursday email.
Nearby, an outbreak at the Sullivan County Department of Corrections included a total of 45 cases, including 33 inmates and 12 employees as of Thursday, County Manager Derek Ferland said in an email. Six employees and six inmates have recovered.

UNITY Four residents have now died at a Sullivan County nursing home in a COVID-19 outbreak that has grown to be the largest in the Upper Valley thus far, according to the facility’s administrator.
The outbreak as of Friday includes a total of 120 people, 79 residents and 41 employees, said Ted Purdy, the Unity nursing home’s administrator, in a Facebook post.
Hanover Terrace, with a total of 111 cases, was previously the largest outbreak in the region. That outbreak, which left seven residents dead, has ended.
