BC health officials were on the defensive Friday after leaked internal reports from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) showed that only a fraction of available data regarding COVID-19 in the province was being shared with the public.
Vancouver Sun, revealed information that isn’t found in the reports that are released to the public by the BCCDC every week.
In a last-minute press conference on Friday afternoon, Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry and Deputy Provincial Health Officer Réka Gustafson both defended the province’s approach to how data is released.
“From the very beginning of this pandemic… we have brought scientists together through the BCCDC to help inform decisions, to work through the data, and help us understand what it means and what’s happening,” said Henry. “You need to understand what the backstory is before you understand what the numbers are.”
