For the first time on Monday, State Attorney R.J. Larizza answered questions about the controversial case involving an 18-year-old migrant who is accused in the death of a St. Johns County deputy.
A civil attorney sent a demand letter to the State Attorney’s Office and the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office to drop the charges against 18-year-old Vergilio Aguilar-Mendez.
The St. Johns County Medical Examiner found that St. Johns County Sgt. Deputy Michael Kunovich who collapsed and later died at a hospital in May following a struggle with a Guatemalan man who he was trying to detain died due to cardiac dysrhythmia, an abnormal or irregular heartbeat, that was the result of damaged arteries and high blood pressure.
After a 44-page incident report revealed that St. Johns County Sgt. Deputy Michael Kunovich died from natural causes after a struggle with an 18-year-old Guatemalan migrant whom he was trying to detain, Vergilio Aguilar Mendez is still charged with manslaughter and has been in jail since May.
