suzanne hopper, seen here, she was married with two children and officials describing it as an ambush and saying that deputy hopper never had a chance to take cover or return fire and he refuse today surrender and opened fire and accord to go one witness all hell broke loose. a fierce gun battle between police and the shooter inside the trailer and by the time the whole thing was over, a second officer was shot and the suspect was dead. casey stegall joins us with more. what else do we know how else all of this went down. it s such a sad story to report on. especially over a holiday weekend and bizarre chain of event. the deputy was responding to reports of gunfire, when she got there, all was quiet and she began her investigation. she was trying to photograph evidence outside that trailer home when the suspect apparently opened his door and shot her without warning. one shot and it killed her. her partner was interviewing another family inside that
and suffered a collapsed lung. he was flown to a nearby hospital. the suspect, 57-year-old michael ferryman found dead on the scene. it s not known whether wounds were self-inflicted. this is the worst day in my 24 years as a sheriff of clark county. reporter: deputy hopper once earned officer of the year honors and volunteered in community charities. she leaves behind two children and her husband. she always had a big smile. she liked to have fun. she was very, very well-respected on the sheriff s department. reporter: so far, no motive has been given for the incident. officer bloom is in fair condition, and could be released from the hospital as soon as today. deputy hopper s family is planning her funeral. we miss her. you know, you always think one more time, why couldn t i talk to her one more time? see her one more time? that was taken away from us. reporter: for today , john yang, nbc news. would michael jackson take his own life?
