compared with 29% of white students. miguel, what more are you learning about the officer here? we haven t much about his background. reporter: there s been a lot of talk about this being a racist incident. the board meeting behind me right now, somebody got up to talk about this very thing. one thing the sheriff said today that was very interesting. that this is an individual with a long-term relationship with an african-american woman. the sheriff said we ve never seen any racist attitude or behavior out of him. it comes as a complete surprise. he s mounting his investigation. we ll have an answer in 24 hours to whether or not he will stay. the other thing about deputy fields is that he has been named in two federal civil rights complaints. one dismissed by a jury and the other pending. the idea this person is simply a
completed by tomorrow. again, just like anybody else who saw it i m very disturbed by it. we re going to handle it appropriately and very quickly. this is not something that should drag out. this is a priority for our internal affairs division. reporter: the sheriff cautioning, it is still unclear what occurred before cameras started rolling. the school board calling the video extremely disturbing and has banned the deputy from all of the district s schools pending an investigation. parents also stunned by what happened. most school resource officers are great people. they do awesome work in our schools. but this is a shame. to get a phone call that that would have happened to my daughter, i don t know how i would have responded. when you see a video like what we ve seen earlier today, it certainly alarms you and makes you a little bit afraid of what is actually happening within our schools. reporter: deputy fields has been a subject of two lawsuits in the last ten years.
job in the task that i gave them to do. and that was to investigate this incident as a policy violation. to see if deputy fields broke any of our policies and procedures that we do. i think somebody asked yesterday, normally in cases like this, it takes a long extended time to do it. this one did not need to take very long. the videos helped, the statements we got, the proper procedures that we go by are already there for us to know. so it was not something that needed to take long and it didn t take long. i think sometimes in these cases and maybe other places they take a little bit unnecessary time. we felt like we needed to do this very quickly because the public needed to know what happened and what our response was going to be to this. again, our responsibility was to do the internal investigation
after seeing this video what were your impressions? can you give us your impressions? i want to throw up. i mean, it just makes you sick to your stomach when you see that initial video. but, again, that s a snapshot. as a professional i have to look beyond just that one first video and look at the total picture. and that s what we re doing. now, according to sheriff lott there are three different student cell phone videos showing what occurred in that classroom. including one that appears to show the student hitting the officer. the student was arrested and charged with disturbing schools. now today the sheriff will announce his decision concerning deputy fields future employment. the sheriff said he doesn t believe race was a factor in what happened. but the videos have garnered national attention. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton weighed in yesterday, tweeting, there s no excuse for violence inside a school. the assault at spring valley high is unacceptable. s
