New test centre being set up after South African Covid-19 variant discovered

A new South African COVID-19 variant has arrived in the West Midlands AN URGENT reminder has been issued to people in Sandwell of the need to self-isolate if they develop COVID-19 symptoms, test positive or have been in contact with an infected person. The message comes following news of the variant that emerged in South Africa reaching the West Midlands and concerns that it is more transmissible than the original COVID-19 strain. Disruption likely as Birchfield Lane off Birchley Island in Oldbury closes for sewer repairs

Pic: Google A MAIN Oldbury road has closed for a week, causing disruption for motorists, while urgent sewer repair works are carried out. Birchfield Lane, off Birchley Island, closed to traffic today (Tuesday January 12) until next Tuesday (January 19) in the direction of Blackheath. Sandwell Council said the closure is likely to cause disruption to all routes in the area and urged motorists to avoid the area at busy times. It said motorists will not be able to turn right on to the McDonald’s car park off Birchfield Lane for the duration of the works. Amey and Severn Trent are carrying out repairs to sewers in the area.

MBE honour for Haleema's work

Haleema Yousaf SANDWELL Council s Haleema Yousaf has been awarded an MBE in the New Year s Honours List 2021 for services to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Haleema, who is team leader of the council s Fair Access, Exclusion and Reintegration Team, said she was humbled to receive the honour and described it as an achievement for the whole team. Haleema said it was brought home to her how far she had come during a conversation with a Sandwell headteacher, who had taught her as a child at school in Birmingham. She said: She was visibly moved by the thought that someone she had taught would one day lead a team unequivocally committed to making a difference to children and young people with SEND.
