Updated at 1:42 p.m. Wednesday Two teenagers were injured Tuesday evening in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 59 in southern Douglas County. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the wreck around 9:15 p.m. A car with three people heading north had rear-ended a semitrailer near the intersection of North 650 Road, Deputy Charlie Cooper said. The two passengers in the car were injured in the crash and were taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, while the car’s driver suffered minor injuries, Cooper said. All three were Lawrence 18-year-olds. The two individuals in the semitrailer a 45-year-old North Carolina man and his 12-year-old son were not injured.

A Lawrence man who reportedly led police on a chase through town on Wednesday is facing two felony charges in Douglas County District Court. Brandon T. Rothwell, 29, made his first appearance in court Thursday, where he was charged with attempted aggravated arson and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, which are both felonies, according to a charging document provided to the Journal-World on Friday. Rothwell was also charged with criminal restraint, which is a misdemeanor, according to the document.

An overnight fire at an energy plant in the Lawrence area was the result of a turbine malfunction, an Evergy official said Thursday afternoon. Kaley Bohlen, a spokeswoman for Evergy, told the Journal-World the malfunction sparked a small fire at the energy center, located at 1250 North 1800 Road, but it was quickly controlled and no one was injured in the incident. “The turbine is shut down and the rest of the plant is safely operating,” Bohlen said in an email. Deputy Charlie Cooper, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies helped respond to the fire but were no longer needed when they arrived. She said Consolidated Fire District No. 1 led the response to the call. The Journal-World’s calls to the fire district on Thursday were not returned.
