In a slew of nominations Tuesday, President Joe Biden tapped Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to become the new director of the Department of Homeland Security s Immigration and Customs Enforcement.Â
If approved, Gonzalezâwho received a bachelorâs degree from the University of Houston Downtown and a masterâs degree from the University of St. Thomas, and has served in various locally elected positions for the past decadeâwould replace acting director Tae Johnson (ICE hasnât had a Senate-confirmed head since 2017) and lead 20,000 people at the federal immigration agency.Â
