LOS ANGELES California surpassed 40,000 coronavirus deaths as the state’s steepest surge of cases begins to taper.
The tally by Johns Hopkins University shows the state passed the milestone Saturday with 40,240 deaths. The deaths are surging at a record pace after recent declines in cases and hospitalizations. It took six months for California to record its first 10,000 deaths, then four months to double to 20,000.
In just five weeks, the state reached 30,000 and needed only 20 days to get to 40,000.
New York leads the U.S. with more than 43,000 confirmed deaths, followed by California, Texas at 36,000 and Florida at 26,000.

Bucks exec Alex Lasry gets COVID-19 shot early
Right now, frontline health care works, residents of long-term care facilities, emergency personnel, and seniors 65 and older are eligible for the shots while the vaccine supply remains limited.
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Bucks executive Alex Lasry tweeted he received the COVID-19 vaccine this week.
In the tweet, Lasry said his wife got a call from her uncle that works in a facility that had extra doses that were going to go to waste if not used right away. Lasry s wife is pregnant and he indicated we wanted to ensure our home, and entire community is safe for everyone.
Officials noted that the deaths are always a lagging statistic that follow rising case and hospitalization numbers, so fatalities are likely to remain high through the rest of the month thanks to the December surge in cases.
