"Smoking associated with two to four-fold increase in the risk of coronary heart disease, a greater than 70 percent excess rate of death from coronary heart disease and an elevated risk of sudden death," Department of Health Disease Prevention and Control Bureau lead Dr. Maria Rosario Sylvia Uy said in a media forum. The latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death among Filipinos as of Oct. 31, 2022.
