In the aftermath of Ashling Murphy’s murder in January 2022, Justice Minister Helen McEntee promised “zero tolerance” and a new strategy that would thoroughly tackle gender-based violence in Ireland. In June of that year, the Department of Justice published its third national strategy on the issue. Its action plan has been designed to ensure, in McEntee’s words, that those who engage with the justice system “are treated with respect, dignity and empathy by everyone they come into contact with from the outset”.
