Asked whether Russia was responsible for the massive SolarWinds hack, Mr Barr contradicted the president’s attempts to deflect focus for the hack away from the Kremlin. “From the information I have, I agree with secretary [Mike] Pompeo’s assessment, it certainly appears to be the Russians but I’m not going to discuss it beyond that,” Mr Barr said.

The denial comes as outgoing attorney general William Barr supported secretary of state Mike Pompeo’s assertion that Russia was pretty clearly behind the cyberattack. Multiple US agencies were compromised in the attack, including Defence, State, Treasury, Homeland Security and Commerce, as well as the Department of Energy’s National Security Administration, which is responsible for the country s nuclear arsenal.

Quoting senior administration officials, Axios reported that acting defence secretary Chris Miller ordered the Pentagon-wide pause on cooperation with the incoming Biden administration in a move that has stunned leadership. Mr Miller, who was appointed to replace former defence secretary Mark Esper in the immediate aftermath of the election, reportedly issued the order throughout the building to cancel scheduled meetings on Thursday night. A senior Defence Department official told Axios it was a “simple delay of the last few scheduled meetings until after the new year”.
